Sharing God's Message to Me

Gain Wisdom and Action

19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. Rom 7:19
66 Teach me wisdom and knowledge, for in your commands I trust. Ps 119:66
 You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Lk 12:56-57

One is often, perhaps even always, bothered by conscience when one is remiss in doing what is good. Take for instance today. As I was preparing for this sharing, a man outside called, "Tao po!" It was Enteng whom I vaguely remember but who said he used to clean our gutters, repaired our oven once, even did some gardening for us occasionally. He said he lived in Antipolo for some time but that life there being difficult he decided to venture out into the city again, and approached people he remembered in case they had any tasks for him for a day. I felt I wanted to give him something to do but couldn't think of any since our garden was just recently trimmed, our oven was also just repaired again, and our gutters long removed from our fascia. I called out to my wife if she had any tasks Enteng could do. None. Since he didn't have a cellphone, all he could say was where we could possibly find him if we had anything for him to do.

He wasn't begging for money, which I appreciated. He was just earnest to find work, even a daily task. As he bade goodbye and mounted his bike, I felt a tug in my heart. Why couldn't I have just asked him to trim my garden again? Or trim my mother-in-law's garden across the street? Had I done so Enteng would have earned a day's wage. Instead, I felt stingy about the cost of gardening again. I did not do the good I want. Today again I wasn't a good vessel of God's blessings through me. Too slow to think, too late to respond.

Lord, teach me wisdom and knowledge that I may know how to interpret the present time, the present situations when you appear as someone needy, and grant me the courage to respond quickly and generously out of the blessings you have poured through me. Amen.

Choose Your Attitude

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,
but he who walks wisely will be delivered. PROVERBS 28:26

     This may shock you, but I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude . . . keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there's no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me.
     Yet, we must admit that we spend more of our time concentrating and fretting over the things that can't be changed in life than we do giving attention to the one thing that can, our choice of attitude.

Pagninilay sa Ebanghelyo

Ika-29 na Linggo ng Taon (A)
Oktubre 16, 2011
Mga Pagbasa: Is 45:1.4-6 / 1 Tes 1:1-5 / Mt 22:15-21

Unang Pagbasa
Isaias 45: 1-6

At sa mga lunsod, mga pintong tanso'y aking wawasakin;
pati kandadong bakal ay aking tatanggalin.
3 Ibibigay ko sa iyo ang nakatagong mga kayamanan at alahas;
5 Ako si Yahweh, ako lamang ang Diyos at wala nang iba;

Salmo
Awit 96: 1-10

Diyos ang Kataas-taasang Hari

1 Purihin natin si Yahweh, awitan ng bagong awit;
2 Awitan natin si Yahweh, ngalan niya ay sambahin;
5 Ang diyos ng sanlibuta'y pawang mga diyus-diyosan;
6 Siya'y puspos ng karangalan at ng kaluwalhatian;
"Sanlibuta'y matatag na, kahit ito ay ugain;
sa paghatol sa nilikha, lahat pantay sa paningin."

Pangalawang Pagbasa
1 Tesalonica 1: 1-5

               1 Mula kina Pablo, Silas, at Timoteo---

“no matter what they tell us; no matter what they do … no matter what they teach us … what I believe is true!”

Power Of Prayer - How powerful is it?

The power of prayer should not be underestimated. James 5:16-18 declares, "…The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." God most definitely listens to prayers, answers prayers, and moves in response to prayers.

Jesus taught, "…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you" (Matthew 17:20). 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 tells us, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." The Bible urges us, "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18).

Power Of Prayer - How do I tap into it?

The power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power resides in the God who is being prayed to. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him." No matter the person praying, the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer - God answers prayers that are in agreement with His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His will, we will come to understand that in time. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God's will, God responds powerfully!

We cannot access powerful prayer by using "magic formulas." Our prayers being answered is not based on the eloquence of our prayers. We don't have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him" (Matthew 6:7-8). Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, "Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." There is power in prayer!

Power Of Prayer - For what kind of things should I pray?

God's help through the power of prayer is available for all kinds of requests and issues. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." If you need an example of a prayer, read Matthew 6:9-13. These verses are known as the Lord's prayer. The Lord's prayer is not a prayer we are supposed to memorize and simply recite to God. It is only an example of how to pray and the things that should go into a prayer - worship, trust in God, requests, confession, protection, etc. Pray for these kinds of things, but speak to God using your own words.

The Word of God is full of accounts describing the power of prayer in various situations. The power of prayer has overcome enemies (Psalm 6:9-10), conquered death (2 Kings 4:3-36), brought healing (James 5:14-15), and defeated demons (Mark 9:29). God, through prayer, opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom (James 1:5). The power of prayer should never be underestimated because it draws on the glory and might of the infinitely powerful God of the universe! Daniel 4:35 proclaims, "All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: 'What have you done?'"

Daily Prayer: What Jesus Said and Did

Jesus taught us the importance of daily prayer. He said, “Always pray, never lose heart” (Luke 18:1). He also said to converse with God day and night (Luke 18:7). When He taught His disciples to pray, He told them to ask God for their daily needs (Luke 11:3).

Jesus set an example of daily prayer by praying during all kinds of circumstances:
  • He prayed at His baptism (John 3:21).
  • He prayed as He faced His passion (Matthew 26:39) and on the cross (Matthew 27:46; Luke 23:34, 46).
  • Jesus prayed while in agony, He prayed all the more earnestly (Luke 22:44).
  • He prayed during sad times, like at the tomb of His friend Lazarus.
  • He prayed all night before He chose His disciples. (Luke 6:12).
  • He prayed when He broke bread and gave it to others to eat (John 6:11).
Jesus made it a priority to pray. "Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed" (Luke 5:16), or He sent the crowds away and “went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray” (Matthew 14:23). We also read that Jesus rose "very early in the morning" and "went off to a solitary place where He prayed" (Mark 1:35).

Daily Prayer: What Else the Bible Says

The Bible tells us to pray on all occasions, making our requests known to God (Ephesians 6:18). Scripture tells us to pray without stopping (1 Thessalonians 5:17). It tells us never to worry about anything, and to thank God for what He has already provided (Philippians 4:6).
Jesus taught His followers to pray a simple daily prayer. You may know it by heart already as “The Lord’s Prayer,” but it will become more meaningful to you if you take time to think about what each phrase means. Then say it in your own words:
  • “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.” At the beginning of your prayer, acknowledge that God is your Father. For example, you might pray, "God, thank You for loving me and adopting me as Your child, though I did nothing to deserve Your love."
  • “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” These phrases are all about your desire to have God's ideals acted out here on earth. Ask God to show you what He wants done today and to give you the energy or courage to do it. Ask Him to show you any ways in which you might be unaware you are doing something that is less than His ideal and to help you change.
  • “Give us this day our daily bread.” Ask God to provide for you physically today. Feel free to ask for other needs such as housing, clothing, a job, safety, etc. Get specific about what you need and thank Him for the ways He has provided in the past.
  • “And forgive us our trespasses even as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Ask God to forgive you for those things you know you have done wrong. You may want to pray for God's help in conquering a sin that keeps recurring in your life. Ask God for His forgiveness and thank Him. Then, think about whether there is anyone in your life who you have not forgiven. Take a moment to mentally forgive others. Ask God to intervene in those areas of your life.
  • “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” After praying for forgiveness, pray for protection from temptations and evil for self and family.
  • “For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen.” Acknowledge that God has the power to answer your prayers and perform what He has promised.

For Our Guardian Angels

O God, You have given Your Angels charge of us
To keep us in all our ways

Angel of God, my Guardian Dear,
To whom His love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guide, to rule and guard,
From sinful stain, O keep me free,
And from death's hour my helper be.
Amen (100 days indulgence)

O God, who in Your wondrous providence graciously send Your Angles to watch over us, grant that we who pray to You may be ever under Their protection and may rejoice in Their unending companionship. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN

Who Are Guardian Angels?

Guardian Angels are thought to be spiritual beings that are "assigned" to assist people here on Earth in various ways. Whether there is one angel per person, one angel for several person or several angels for one person is open to question. But whether you believe in them or not, or whether you want one or not, believers insist that you do have a guardian angel.

What is their assignment? According to "Encounters of the Angelic Kind" at Future365 (now defunct), "they intercept at many junctures in our lives and help wherever they can to make our lives run smoothly. Sometimes this is by inspiring a thought to spur us into action, at others it is to lend us super-human strength, such as in the case of a woman being able to lift a car long enough to free her trapped child. Or we hear of a runaway truck, with an unconscious driver at the wheel, inexplicably swerving sharply at the last moment to avoid a bus stop queue of people. In fact, there are many instances, which are often put down to luck, coincidence or even a miracle, but which have the touch of a hand of light behind it."

So why don't angels come to a person's aid every time it's asked for? Sometimes, the article contends, "angels must stand back, whilst giving loving support only, as we work things out for ourselves - these are the times when we feel alone, the dark before dawn."

How Do We Know Angels Are There?

Even those who believe in the existence of angels concede that they rarely make a physical appearance. However, there are other ways guardian angels can make their presence known, they say.

"Some people say that they hear angelic sounds totally beyond human description," according to the article "Angels" at Future365. "Others have a feeling of sudden warmth or comfort, or, in times of sadness or grief, a gentle cloak of feathered wings wrapping softly around them. Sometimes angel energy may feel entirely different - like a sudden rush of air created by the passing by of an 'angel on a mission' at the speed of light. This is often noticed at times of impending disaster. At other times, simply an inexplicable presence is felt."

How To Contact Your Guardian Angel

Robert Graham, in his article "Angel Talk: Are You Listening", suggests that we all have guardian angels that are willing to communicate with us, but that most of the time we are just too busy to listen. If we are attentive, he says, and are willing to remain open to this communication, we can receive subtle messages that can help us in our daily lives.

"If you want a clear and concise message from your angel," Graham says, "you must ask a direct question. Your angel will always answer your questions. You must ask your question out loud. Clear, concise questions will get you clear, concise answers. Answers will always be tangible and explicit, something you can put your hands on. The answers I've gotten I could pick up and examine. Asking a frivolous question will get you a silly answer. The universe will match your level of sincerity."

Angels are always willing to help us, according to Doreen Virtue in her article "Calling All Angels" on beliefnet, but we have to be willing to accept the assistance since we have free will. "To ask for angelic assistance, you needn't conduct a formal invocation ceremony," Virtue says. The methods she suggests are likely to be much more familiar and comfortable to most people, including:
  • writing a letter to your guardian angel - spelling out your problem and your need
  • visualizing - "see" protective angels around you in your mind's eye
  • call them mentally - think your plea to the angels
  • speak aloud - state your case verbally
"Connect with Your Angel" suggests yet another method: meditation. "Make yourself comfortable, sitting or lying down. Be aware of your breathing... Let your body become limp and relaxed. Empty your mind; create space, just as though the whole of the universe was there, inside you. Now just be. No doing. Only being. Communicate to your angel that you wish to connect with her/him. Wait in peace. Be aware of what happens. It may not seem much at first. Be patient. Subtle changes will occur. You may see light, colors or form. You may be aware of a presence. You may feel tingling sensations. You may feel emotion. You will feel love."

You'll find even more suggestions for making contact with your guardian angel at "5 Hot Tips for Tuning into Angels," which details how you can ask or invoke, use stillness for clear reception, use "heart sensing," pay them by sending them love, and maintain harmony in your aura and home environment.

Is all this just superstitious folly? Is the idea of guardian angels just a human invention designed to help people cope with difficult problems? Or are they real beings? The matter cannot be proved or disproved definitively. Perhaps only your own faith or experience can determine their reality for you. If you believe you have had an experience or encounter with an angelic being, please write and tell me about it. Your true story will be included in a future article.
